Is this guy playing me or just being nice?

Being friends with him is a bad idea for you, because you care so much for him and you seem to misunderstand some things. Saying stay in touch for this guy probably means exactly what you think it does: have a nice life. He knows you are gay and is not phobic, but he has clearly let you know he doesn't swing that way. He's just nice so accept that and if you ever see him again I'm sure he'll still be just as nice. But to save yourself, I think you should just let him go on.
