Why is finding a piano teacher so hard? Help.?

Craigslist or the MTNA would be fine. Don't be afraid to ask for lesson plans and references. I would advise against group lessons. A good teacher should be able to explain his or her philosophy of teaching, and explain a little about how the first several lessons will play out, as well as explain some longer term goals. Feel free to ask what types of music his/her other students are playing - if it's mostly pop, or simplified arrangements of difficult clical pieces (for instance, Ode to Joy is not a piano piece, so students shouldn't be performing it), this is probably not a good "long term" prospect; look for a teacher who is familiar with beginner clical pieces. Any teacher who is uncomfortable with these questions isn't a good investment.
