Why is it illegal to overtake an emergency vehicle even when their not in an emergency?

I overtook a ambulance then they reported my license plate and got caught..... then let of of cuz i got VIP status over the &*$@#@!* paramedics.... why is it illegal? that's so dumb what are you guys, above the law? of course you guys are are. ********s
