Can I applique a Mariner's Star together??

I have to do a 12" quilt square for a quilt they are making where I work. My block will represent our entire office. I would like to do a Mariner's Comp, to represent leadership. Any helpful hints?? They gave me a 12" square of off white muslin as the basis for my square (YUK!) - so my idea has to be on it - that's why I want to applique the comp on.
