A depressing situation?

Can anyone think of a depressing situation, that would make you want to run away? I'm trying to write something for english and I have a guy who is running from his emotions and his sadness, but what could cause him to run from everything? A death seems alright, but people don't tend to run as far as possible from everything if someone dies. hmmmm.....
